Title: In search of culturally and contextually sensitive infant mental health practice for South Africa: The Ububele Trust's Parent-Infant Service
Presenter: Dr Nicki Dawson
Dr Nicki Dawson is a registered Counselling Psychologist and the Parent-Infant Programmes Clinical Lead for the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust. She completed both her Masters in Community-Based Counselling Psychology and her Doctorate in Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her doctoral research investigated the intersection of sensitive responsiveness, culture and context. Nicki’s professional career has had a special focus on infant mental health. Nicki has spent over 8 years at the head of Ububele's Parent-Infant Programmes, overseeing the implementation of various infant mental health interventions including the Ububele Home Visiting, Baby Mat, Parent-Infant Psychotherapy and NBO services. Nicki is responsible for the development of an infant mental health service at the local government hospital, where infants and mothers in the post-natal and neonatal ICU wards now receive mental health consultations and the NBO. Nicki is a certified NBO trainer. She is also an appointed lecturer extraordinary at the University of Stellenbosch, on the Masters in Infant Mental Health course, as well as the secretary for the South African Association for Infant Mental Health.
About Ububele: The Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust is a registered Non-Profit Organisation operating in Johannesburg South Africa. Founded in 2000, by psychologists and Anti-Apartheid activists Tony and Hillary Hamburger, Ububele served as a response to the psychological and emotional consequences of Apartheid trauma. Ububele is both a training and service center, providing a wealth of infant and child mental health services to the community of Alexandra Township, and training in those interventions to the broader South African mental health community. Ububele strives to integrate international best practice with local contextual realities and knowledge, ensuring culturally and contextually ethical mental health practice. Ububele has a special focus on infant mental health, with the majority of its work focused on supporting early neuro-relational development in the first 1000 days of life. Ububele is the only NBO training center in Africa.
